Visualizing Dumbledore, Books Characters:

Treemap

Information for reading this visualization:

  • The graph above is called a treemap. In this treemap, you can look at the top five most similar words for all seven characters in Rowling's seven novels. It categorizes things by color and size: color tells you what character you're looking at, and size tells you how similar it is to that character in relation to how similar all the other top five words are to their character.

  • If you hover over any rectangle, it will show you the character, word, and similarity index of that space. If you click on that word, it will highlight it. If you click on one of the character names in the legend, it will highlight all of that character's words.

Questions to prompt analysis:

  • Do you see any words that appear across characters? Why might that word be similar to multiple characters?

  • Are there any words on here that you would have expected to be similar to a character other than the one it is actually linked to? Why?

  • Which of these characters do you feel is accurately captured in their top five words? Which ones do you think are really different? Why might these words appear in their top five?

So, what did you find? Leave a comment to tell us what you thought and check out what others have been seeing!
