How to Use This Website
Step 1: Choose a Character
When you first select visualize data, you will be greeted with a page that looks like this:
This is by far the easiest step. All you need to do is pick a name that you want to focus on. You'll notice that a lot of the work through this tutorial is about focus. Once you start looking at individual words, there's simply too much out there to look at everything. You have to narrow some way, and the first place you have to do that with Word2Vec is in telling it what word you want to look at. You have seven choices.
We chose these seven names very intentionally: all seven names are prominent and distinctive in both Rowling's novels and in the fan fiction. We started with the golden trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione), but also wanted to look at one other character from each generation represented in the books to see if there were any generational differences: Harry's generation (Draco), his parents' generation (Sirius), the generation before that (Voldemort) and the generation before that (Dumbledore). Generational differences were our focus, but, of course, these names could provide some other interesting comparisons, between good and evil, for instance.
For now, you just need to pick one name. For the purpose of this tutorial, go ahead and pick Harry up above.
